About

Hi there! My name is Yin, and I created The Present Poet with the mission of providing an online platform that shares relevant poems, made both both myself and other fabulous writers, in response to current times. I am Chinese American and currently a junior at Horace Mann School in The Bronx, New York. In addition to my passion for poetry, I love to read and write short stories and flash fiction as well. Besides literary hobbies, I also enjoy painting, baking, and drinking copious amounts of bubble tea! Though there might be a lot of chaos at the moment, I believe that The Present Poet can be a safe space for people to see that they’re not alone in their struggles to understand the contemporary world. I, myself, am constantly trying improve when it comes to my writing, as I find that it is one of the most powerful tools in today’s society! I hope you come across some work in this blog that inspires you to consider how you can use your words to effect change, no matter how great that change might be!

Mission Statement

From COVID-19 to the Death of George Floyd to the Black Lives Matter Movement as a whole, 2020 has been filled with moments that will forever shape the way we live our lives. However, as with any rapidly evolving period, emotions are running rampant, and many are choosing to turn to writing as their method for, either, responding to or coping with the revolutions that are progressing in our modern day. Whether you are reading it or writing it, poetry can serve as a vital device in conveying one’s emotions, and I know, from firsthand experience, that it also can drastically improve your mental health. I, myself, have been overcome with overwhelming feelings countless times throughout the course of this year, so one way that I have been trying to recenter myself is through the usage of poetry. As a result of all these realizations, I decided to create The Present Poet with a goal in mind: to encourage the writing poetry as a mechanism for expressing oneself, while simultaneously sharing poems that attempt to address modern-day issues. In order to accomplish this mission, I will be posting some of my own poetry—where I try to discuss the personal challenges that I have faced in terms of my identity—in addition to posting several other poems that I think have authors who succeed in tackling complex concepts and conflicts in an creative manner. This same mission statement applies to both my blog and my instagram, so I hope that this message will translate to you throughout this collective journey!
